RE: converting a van to a camper

Well I've been told it is useless to try to sell vans right now, so after reading and thinking some more I quess we will use it as is and just carry a screen tent to cook in.It makes sense to NOT build alot of stuff in it so we can use it for passengers too. I like the idea of having something a little more solid than a tent to get in case of a bad thunderstorm if a bathhouse is not available. We were at the beach last week and even the pop-up folks were in their trucks. I figure a van would do better!Summer storms in the South are terrible with lightening and driving rain and winds! I think it will work fine for the occasional over-nighter to the lake while pulling the boat.We can just park close to the bathhouse :)

RE: converting a van to a camper

It's a short with a small v-8. My husband is concerned about the smaller engine with any extra weight. We've pulled our 94 17ft. caravelle boat up and down a few mountains with no problems. I looked at some of the sites people posted on here.

RE: converting a van to a camper

I came to this thread to see if we could do the same thing with out 94 full size van. It already has the high roof snd TV.

RE: Luxury RV park, Gulf Shores, AL

BTW, the Shrimp Basket is good as well as the ice cream place across the street. We haven't camped at the beach in 15 years so we are looking forward to it. We've stayed in hotels everything other year.

Luxury RV park, Gulf Shores, AL

Just letting you all know as of a week ago Luxury RV Park in Gulf Shores had some openings. They said people were canceling due to gas prices. We are going to a workshop anyway!:B We had reservations at the State Park, but this time this park with its pool and location will work better for us.

RE: campground's with trailler age restriction?

We have an 24 ft 85 Aljo 5th wheel that we bought last year after we sold our MH. We hand scrubbed it with clorox and D-10 cleaner, bought new molding around the edges so it is pretty and white, painted everything I could paint on the outside with oil based paint, new tires, new awning, new window stripping, new step covers. My husband even figured out how to make a wheel skirt covering from wood ( new one was 200.00) which I painted to match the other one. You have to really get up close to tell it is not the original. We also replaced a little paneling on the inside which looks almost identical to the rest. Right now we have about $2,500.00 in it and alot of hard work. Point is, I would LOVE to have a bigger, newer one and have looked at everything we could possibly afford. However, with gas prices either we can get a newer one or GO places in our old one which still looks decent and works. With diesel nearly 5.00 a gallon campgrounds need to appreciate anyone that drives up to their gate!! Matterfact, we got reservations in 2 weeks at a private campround at the beach due to the fact so many people had canceled! They didn't ask our age camper!

RE: Gas Mileage????

We had an 1985 mh about your size for 12 years that we kept up pretty regularly. I would definately have it all checked out with new hoses and the works before you hit the heat of Mexico or even Texas! Plus, go slow and don't overload it!

RE: Is Mem. Day travel down?

Guntersville State Park in Alabama was full on Wednesday. NOTHING was left! We stayed home and just went out in the boat on the TN River. Not much going on out there either..most were just anchored.

RE: GULF SHORES, ALABAMA

As of a month ago I was told Luxury RV was full for the summer or for my week so I made reservations at the State Park for the end of June.( I wanted a pool :(( ) The State Park has a very nice pavilion on the beach with a bathhouse and shade within biking distance of the campground. I think sites closer to the beach lost their trees due to the hurricane from what I remember seeing last summer. There are some still some shady spots back around the lake if you can get them.

RE: Privatizing public campgrounds

The idea of government selling our public land is so frustrating. It's like the little man doesn't matter at all anymore.

RE: air condtitioned tent camping

I think it sounds like a good idea. Our State Park campgrounds are so crowded there is no way for a breeze to get through in a tent.Humidity is no fun at all unless you're in the water.

RE: Awning screen rooms??

We have one that we used with our 24 foot motorhome and now use with a 24ft 5th wheel. Both campers are 1985 models with no slide so it give us alot more room. It gets easier to put up and down the more you practice. It helps with cold wind, rain and bugs... Just make sure you get the tie downs to anchor your awning so if a big storm comes up it will hold. We saw one at the beach by the bay that did fine during ALOT of wind. I chickened out and took ours down but we would have been fine if we'd tied it down.

RE: cleaning a/c

Thanks, I was just making sure. Our a/c froze up the other night which is unusual this time of year. My son can climb up and do it.

So how do you all clean the A/C without getting on your roof?

Airstreams?

Would it cost as much to pull a 30ft. 9,000 lb Airstream as a regular, same size box style trailer that is lighter due to the design?

RE: Anyone cancelling trips due to gas prices?

The weekend trips are too costly since it is just about 100.00 to take the camper and boat to the lake for just 1 night. It's only about an hour and half but still that is pretty pricey to me. We're getting our beach trip paid for since we are combing work with fun so that doesnt' really count.

RE: State parks

We have a 14 day rule on a front site of the water, but not the other sites. Other than that, the park is great at 23.00 a night or around that.
